Parasites

NCI recognizes infectious agents as cancer risk factors, including some parasites. The best-established parasite-related cancer examples involve chronic infection and inflammation, such as liver flukes associated with bile duct cancer and Schistosoma haematobium associated with bladder cancer in endemic regions. The cancer pathway is not “parasites” as a broad category, but specific organisms, chronic infection, immune response, and tissue irritation over time.
