Dishwashing liquid and dishwasher detergents should be treated as chemical-mixture exposures rather than direct cancer causes. Cancer relevance depends on ingredients, contaminants, and inhalation or skin-contact patterns. Some cleaning products can contribute to indoor volatile organic compounds or contain fragrance, preservatives, or surfactants that irritate tissues. The most plausible cancer pathway is indirect: cumulative chemical exposure when a product contains known or suspected carcinogens such as formaldehyde-related compounds or benzene contaminants. The evidence does not support saying all dishwashing products cause cancer.
