Description

Overview

Cancer relevance for airport security screening depends on the scanner type. Ionizing radiation can damage DNA and, at sufficient cumulative dose, increase later cancer risk. CDC notes that backscatter x-ray screening used low levels of ionizing radiation, while millimeter-wave scanners do not use x-rays and do not add to ionizing-radiation dose. For an individual traveler, the cancer contribution from standard airport screening is generally considered very small compared with medical imaging or high environmental exposures. The scientifically careful framing is indirect, dose-dependent radiation exposure, not a strong direct cause.
