Aerial Contaminants

Description

Overview

Aerial contaminants are best understood as an exposure category rather than a single cause. Cancer relevance depends on the agent, dose, duration, and route of exposure. Authoritative cancer-risk reviews identify several inhaled hazards that can directly damage DNA, promote chronic inflammation, or expose lung and blood-forming tissues to carcinogenic chemicals. Examples include radon, asbestos, diesel exhaust, benzene, formaldehyde, tobacco smoke, and some occupational airborne mixtures. Routine low-level exposure is not equivalent to high occupational exposure, but indoor air quality, ventilation, and avoidance of known carcinogens matter because inhaled agents can reach sensitive tissues repeatedly over time.
