Allen Oldfather Whipple (1881–1963) was a pioneering American surgeon best known for developing the Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy), the standard surgical operation for treating cancers of the head of the pancreas, ampulla of Vater, distal bile duct, and duodenum.

Born to American missionary parents in Urmia, Persia (now Iran), Whipple moved to the United States as a child. He graduated from Princeton University and received his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1908. He spent his entire career in New York, rising to become Professor of Surgery at Columbia University and Surgeon-in-Chief at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (1921–1946).

In 1935, Whipple performed one of the earliest successful two-stage pancreaticoduodenectomies. He later refined it into a one-stage procedure in 1940. Although he performed only 37 such operations in his lifetime, his technique and publications established the foundation for modern pancreatic surgery. The operation now bears his name and remains the only potentially curative treatment for many patients with periampullary cancers.

Whipple was also known for Whipple’s triad, the classic diagnostic criteria for insulinoma (a pancreatic tumor causing low blood sugar). He was a highly respected educator, author, and leader in American surgery during the mid-20th century.
