What Telomeres Are and Why They Matter
Telomeres are protective caps found at the ends of chromosomes, which are structures inside our cells that carry genetic information. Each time a cell divides, these telomeres get a little shorter. This gradual shortening helps limit how many times a normal cell can divide, which is a natural part of aging and helps prevent damaged cells from growing out of control.
In cancer cells, however, telomeres often do not shorten as expected. Instead, they may stay the same length or even become longer, allowing cancer cells to divide endlessly. This ability helps cancer cells survive and grow.

Research has shown that very short telomeres, especially when combined with low dietary intake of antioxidants like beta carotene, vitamin C, or vitamin E, may be linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. Genes like ACD and CTC1 play important roles in protecting and maintaining telomeres. Changes in these genes can cause rare inherited conditions that increase risks for bone marrow problems, lung scarring, and certain cancers. However, having changes in these genes does not automatically mean a person will develop cancer.
