What Schwann Cells Are and What They Do

Schwann cells are a type of support cell found in the peripheral nervous system, which includes all the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Their main job is to wrap around nerve fibers, creating a protective layer called the myelin sheath. This sheath acts like insulation on electrical wires, helping nerve signals travel quickly and efficiently. Schwann cells also help keep nerve fibers healthy and assist in repairing nerves after injury by guiding regrowth.
