Ribosomes are tiny structures found inside every cell in the body. Their main job is to make proteins by linking together building blocks called amino acids in the exact order needed. Some rare inherited conditions, like Diamond-Blackfan anemia (also called congenital hypoplastic anemia or congenital pure red cell aplasia), happen because of changes in genes that affect how ribosomes work. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, so having too few can cause symptoms like tiredness, weakness, and pale skin.
