What PARP-1 Means in Everyday Medical Language

PARP-1 stands for poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1, an enzyme found inside cells. Enzymes are proteins that help chemical reactions happen. PARP-1’s main role is to help repair damaged DNA, which carries the instructions cells need to work properly. DNA damage happens naturally as cells divide and grow, or from outside factors like sunlight, radiation, and some cancer treatments. When DNA is damaged, PARP-1 helps the cell recognize and fix the damage to keep the cell healthy.
