What Hemophilia Means
Hemophilia is a rare inherited disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot properly. Normally, when you get a cut or injury, your blood forms clots to stop the bleeding. People with hemophilia have low levels of certain proteins called clotting factors—usually factor VIII (8) or factor IX (9)—which are essential for blood clotting. Without enough of these factors, bleeding can last longer and be harder to control. This can lead to easy bruising, bleeding into joints and muscles, and serious bleeding after injuries or surgery.
Why Hemophilia Can Matter in Cancer Care
While hemophilia itself is a genetic condition, bleeding problems can also occur in cancer care for many reasons, such as side effects of treatments or the cancer itself. It’s important to distinguish hemophilia from other causes of bleeding, like acquired conditions such as aTTP (acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura), which involves small blood clots and low platelets. Patients might hear about genetic testing to identify carriers or to test a fetus or newborn for hemophilia.
How Hemophilia Is Diagnosed and Treated
Diagnosis starts with a healthcare provider asking about symptoms and family history, followed by a physical exam. Blood tests measure how well the blood clots and the levels of specific clotting factors. Genetic testing may be offered, especially if there is a family history. Treatment usually involves replacing the missing clotting factor through injections, which can be given regularly to prevent bleeding or as needed during bleeding episodes. Some people with mild hemophilia may use medications like desmopressin to help their blood clot better.
What Hemophilia Does Not Automatically Mean
Not all bleeding or bruising means hemophilia. Many other conditions, including side effects of cancer treatments or other blood disorders, can cause similar symptoms. Hemophilia is a specific inherited disorder confirmed by blood tests. It’s important not to assume hemophilia without proper diagnosis to avoid unnecessary worry or incorrect treatment.
