What an ECG Means in Everyday Medical Language

An ECG, also called an EKG or electrocardiogram, is a test that records the electrical activity of your heart. Your heart produces tiny electrical signals that make it beat and pump blood. During an ECG, small sticky patches called electrodes are placed on your skin, usually on your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes detect the electrical signals and create a line graph that shows how your heart is beating over time.

This graph can reveal if your heart is beating too fast, too slow, or irregularly. It can also show if parts of your heart are damaged or if there are problems with how the electrical signals move through your heart muscle.

Why ECGs Can Matter in Cancer Care

In cancer care, an ECG is important because some cancer treatments can affect your heart’s rhythm or function. For example, certain chemotherapy drugs or radiation therapy may increase the risk of heart problems like irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) or heart damage. Your health care team may use ECGs to monitor your heart health before, during, and after cancer treatment to help keep you safe.

Also, some heart conditions detected by an ECG, such as atrial fibrillation (Afib), can influence how your cancer treatment is planned. Afib can increase the risk of blood clots or stroke, so your care team needs to know if you have it to manage your treatment carefully.

What You Might See or Experience When an ECG Is Done

Having an ECG is quick and painless. You will lie down while a nurse or technician places electrodes on your chest, arms, and legs. These patches are connected by wires to the ECG machine. You will be asked to lie still and breathe normally while the machine records your heart’s electrical activity, usually for about 10 seconds.

You might see the ECG graph on a screen or printed on paper. Your doctor or nurse will explain what the results mean for your heart health and your overall care.

How Doctors Use ECGs in Diagnosis and Monitoring

Doctors use ECGs to check for many heart problems, including irregular heart rhythms, heart attacks, damage to heart muscle, and problems with heart valves. In cancer care, ECGs help monitor the effects of treatment on your heart and guide decisions about your care.

Sometimes, ECGs are done along with other heart tests, like echocardiograms (ultrasound of the heart) or cardiac imaging, to get a fuller picture of your heart health.

Common Confusions and What ECG Does Not Automatically Mean

ECG is sometimes called EKG, which is the same test but a different abbreviation. Seeing the term ECG or EKG in your medical records does not mean you have a heart problem. It simply means the test was done or ordered to check your heart’s electrical activity.

An abnormal ECG result does not always mean serious heart disease. Sometimes, changes on an ECG can be caused by temporary issues like electrolyte imbalances or medications. Your doctor will explain what your specific results mean for you.
