What Conventional Renal Cell Carcinoma Means

Conventional renal cell carcinoma, also known as clear cell renal cell carcinoma or ccRCC, is a type of kidney cancer that starts in the cells lining tiny tubes inside the kidney. These tubes play an important role in filtering blood and returning nutrients and fluids the body needs back into the bloodstream. When doctors look at the cancer cells under a microscope, they appear clear or very pale, which is why this cancer is called “clear cell.” It is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults, making up about 80% of kidney cancer cases.

Why This Cancer Type Matters in Care

Knowing that a kidney cancer is ccRCC helps doctors decide the best ways to diagnose, treat, and monitor the disease. This type of cancer can behave differently from other kidney cancers, so treatment plans are often tailored specifically for it. What Having ccRCC Does Not Automatically Mean

Family Risk and Genetic Links

Some cases of ccRCC run in families, especially in people with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, a genetic condition caused by changes in the VHL gene. This syndrome increases the risk of developing ccRCC and other tumors. If there is a family history of kidney cancer or related conditions, genetic counseling and testing may be helpful.
