Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy where small radioactive sources—such as seeds, pellets, ribbons, wires, needles, balloons, or capsules—are placed directly inside or very close to a tumor. The word "brachy" comes from a Greek word meaning "short distance," reflecting how the radiation is delivered right at the cancer site instead of from outside the body. This approach allows doctors to target cancer cells more precisely while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissues.
The radioactive sources may be inserted using flexible tubes called catheters or larger devices known as applicators. Depending on the type of cancer and treatment plan, these sources can stay in place for a few minutes, several days, or permanently.
Why Brachytherapy Can Matter in Cancer Care
Brachytherapy offers a way to deliver high doses of radiation directly to the tumor while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
