3-D mammography, also called digital breast tomosynthesis, is a special type of breast imaging test that uses low-dose x-rays to take many pictures of the breast from different angles. A computer then combines these pictures to create a detailed, three-dimensional image of the breast tissue. This layered view helps doctors see inside the breast more clearly than traditional 2-D mammograms, which produce flat images from just two angles.
